For Freedoms

Description

Founded in 2016 by artists Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman, For Freedoms is a platform for creative civic engagement, discourse, and direct action. Inspired by American artist Norman Rockwell’s paintings of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms (1941)—freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear—For Freedoms’ exhibitions, installations, and public programs use art to deepen public discussions on civic issues and core values, and to advocate for equality, dialogue, and civic participation. As a nexus between art, politics, commerce, and education, For Freedoms aims to inject anti-partisan, critical thinking that fine art requires into the political landscape through programming, exhibitions, and public artworks. In 2018, For Freedoms launched the 50 State Initiative: the largest creative collaboration in U.S. history.

PopRally Celebrates Charles White

PopRally invites you to experience the work of Charles White during an evening of frenetic jazz by Onyx Collective and civic-minded art from For Freedoms. Celebrate White’s vision of art as a vital force as cross-disciplinary collectives respond to his creative and social ideals. Reserve your ticket: mo.ma/poprallyOnyx Collective will move through the galleries, riffing on the gospel and calypso sounds of White’s contemporaries. Their performance will culminate in a genre-bending dance floor set stacked with musicians and vocalists. Meanwhile, For Freedoms invites you to contribute to a mural as part of their artistic platform for civic engagement, discourse, and direct action. Visit the exhibition Charles White: A Retrospective throughout the evening and enjoy an open bar.Admission is $25. You must be 21 or older to attend this event. Please enter through The Ronald S. and Jo Carole Lauder Building entrance at 11 West 53 Street.Onyx Collective is a nebulous jazz ensemble whose name you may have overheard in downtown Manhattan at some point in the past couple years. If they seem elusive, it is because oftentimes they are. Onyx shows are unannounced, impromptu affairs: you can find them performing in a basement, at a cocktail lounge atop a hotel, on the street, or in a storefront. The lineup is interchangeable, as is the kind of music they play. Onyx Collective has previously performed and toured with artists Nick Hakim, Princess Nokia, Dev Hynes, Wiki, and Kamasi Washington. For Freedoms is a platform for greater participation in the arts and in civil society. They produce exhibitions, installations, public programs, and billboard campaigns to advocate for inclusive civic participation. Inspired by American artist Norman Rockwell’s paintings of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms (1941)—freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear—For Freedoms Federation uses art to encourage and deepen public explorations of freedom in the 21st century.PopRally is a series of events at The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 that serve as a gateway for young and diverse audiences to engage with MoMA. Led by a cross-departmental committee of Museum staff, PopRally produces dynamic programs including artist collaborations, performances, film screenings, and digital content that encourage new and experimental ways of encountering modern and contemporary art....[Image: “Sound of Silence” (detail). 1978. © The Charles White Archives]

My Silences Had Not Protected Me

In collaboration with For Freedoms, a platform for creative civic engagement, discourse, and direct action for artists, Fort Gansevoort presents My Silences Had Not Protected Me, organized by Lucy Beni and Emma Nuzzo. This exhibition unites a collection of artists who together represent the multidimensional intricacies of sexuality and its inherent relationship to power. My Silences Had Not Protected Me challenges the viewer to confront the ways in which societal narratives of sexuality are formed and communicated. Central to this exhibition is the idea of power: how sexuality can be both an object of abuse by the powerful and a source of power for those who wield it. The pieces included in the exhibition share For Freedoms’ conviction that people shape the cultural systems that in turn mold their own lives. My Silences Had Not Protected Me is a resistance to the rigid, disparaging, and marketed monolith of feminine identity that influences the way women are taught and expected to exist within their own physical space - the body. It both confronts the humanity and freedom taken from us through sexual violence and patriarchal systems of oppression, as well as celebrates and embraces sexuality as it is realized and performed by women. The artists’ works featured function at the intersection of process and identity, where the diversity of medium mimics the range of their experienced reality. The various subjects, genres, and expressions challenge notions of domesticity, objectivity, childhood fantasies of womanhood, and the pursuit of freedom.

BE STRONG AND DO NOT BETRAY YOUR SOUL: Selections from the Light Work Collection

Light Work and For Freedoms are pleased to announce Be Strong and Do Not Betray Your Soul: Selections from the Light Work Collection.Borrowing its title from the Charles Biasiny-Rivera piece of the same name, Be Strong and Do Not Betray Your Soul features more than forty photographs from the Light Work Collection that explore topics of politics, social justice, identity, and visibility. These subjects have remained significant for Light Work and many of the artists we have supported over our forty-five year history. The list of artists includes: Laura Aguilar, George Awde, Karl Baden, Lois Barden and Harry Littell, Claire Beckett, Charles Biasing-Rivera, Samantha Box, Deborah Bright, Chan Chao, Renee Cox, Rose Marie Cromwell, Jen Davis, Jess Dugan, John Edmonds, Amy Elkins, Nereyda Garcia Ferraz, Jennifer Garza-Cuen, Antony Gleaton, Jim Goldberg, David Graham, Mahtab Hussain, Osamu James Nakagawa, Tommy Kha, Pipo Nguyen-Duy, Deana Lawson, Mary Mattingly, Jackie Nickerson, Shelley Niro, Suzanne Opton, Kristine Potter, Ernesto Pujol, Irina Rozovsky, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Kanako Sasaki, Pacifico Silano, Clarissa Sligh, Beuford Smith, Amy Stein, Mila Teshaieva, Brian Ulrich, Ted Wathen, Carrie Mae Weems, Carla Williams, Hank Willis Thomas, Pixy Yijun Liao.In addition to the selections of work on view at Light Work, we have collaborated with For Freedoms to display a series of billboards throughout the city of Syracuse created by internationally-renowned artists Zoe Buckman, Eric Gottesman, Carrie Mae Weems, and Hank Willis Thomas. These billboards use photography and text to address social issues and our political climate. This exhibition and related programming coincides with The 50 State Initiative, an ambitious new phase of For Freedoms Fall 2018 programming, during the lead-up to the midterm elections. Building off of the existing artistic infrastructure in the United States, For Freedoms has developed a network of artists and institutional partners, including Light Work, who will produce nationwide public art installations, exhibitions, and local community dialogues in order to inject nuanced, artistic thinking into public discourse. Centered around the vital work of artists, these exhibitions, and related projects will model how arts institutions can become civic forums for action.

Why We Speak: A For Freedoms Town Hall at Photoville

United Photo Industries will be teaming up with For Freedoms, a platform for civic engagement, discourse, and direct action for artists co-founded by Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman in 2016. On the inaugural week of their 50 State Initiative, the For Freedoms team will present a Town Hall event for Photoville’s opening night to highlight a freedom which is close to all of our hearts—Freedom of Speech. As forums for inclusive public conversation and civic dialogue, For Freedoms Town Halls bring citizens together with contemporary artists, designers, and policy makers, welcoming many and diverse points of views. With special guests and performances, this evening will bring together the visual storytelling and artistic communities to ask how, both now and in the past, artists’ right to freedom of speech has been alternately infringed, upheld, and empowered. What is the importance and the power of creating art as a speech act?The evening will also include a special performance by the Resistance Revival Chorus, a collective of more than 50 women who join together to breathe joy and song into the resistance, and to uplift and center women’s voices.Following the For Freedoms Town Hall, please join us for a screening of THE FENCE 2018 and the announcement of the People’s Choice winner.
