American citizenship has long been a project of vision and justice. These words were a part of my guest editor's note for the "Vision & Justice" issue of Aperture. I reflected upon them again in considering how these cover images for the magazine — one by Richard Avedon, the other by Awol Erizku — emblematize how the foundational right of representation in a democracy, the right to be recognized justly, has historically and is still urgently tied to the work of vision in the public realm.
