SACRIFICE

2020

Newark, DE

I’ve been thinking a lot about the parallels between now and the 1960’s. Recently I helped to lead a historic march on Brooklyn for Black trans lives, there were 15,000 people in attendance. I don’t want history-- specifically the exclusion of Black trans and queer voices-- to repeat itself this time. I want us to be remembered for our sacrifices and the resistance that comes along with our everyday existence. This question was informed by that thinking, and the powerful words of Dr. Angela Davis. In a recent interview where she stated:

“And I don't think we would be where we are today—encouraging ever larger numbers of people to think within an abolitionist frame—had not the trans community taught us that it is possible to effectively challenge that which is considered the very foundation of our sense of normalcy.”

This informs the questions of sacrifice! What are people willing to let go of to change the world?
