Every young person deserves a shot at a better life. Rather than incarcerate predominantly poor, children of color, and setting them up for a life of obstacles and recidivism, I believe that we should invest in empowering and educating them. Higher education is a ticket out of poverty and breaks the cycle of recidivism. We, as a country, are failing these children and would rather pay hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to incarcerate them, rather than offer them life-changing opportunities.
