My billboard is inspired by old school hand painted signs, this one in particular was inspired by a sign from a series of signs I have been collecting from all over Africa. In a digital age, everything has been depersonalized and graphic design has displayed words in a very specific rigid way. I’m interested in movement. How do we make words come alive and move off the page? Words are things. They have an energy and can transform us.
The question I am posing is a question I often return to during this time as we look to transform and change our society. Many of us have struggled to survive and create more opportunities for those we love and we know we still live in a society that in order for us to correct the wrongs of this set up, drastic changes must be made in our lives and our perspectives. Have you ever sat with yourself and wondered about what you could do without? I think about this often. It forces us to wonder about what “sacrifice” and “freedom” mean to us. What could possibly be more important than freedom? What are the things we are capable of giving up so others can also be taken care of? What is freedom to you? Hyper-consumption capitalism has corrupted all of us. Also what are we willing to create? As we struggle through the contradiction of living in this country, we all have a role to play in shifting its course. When each of us commits to transforming ourselves who do we become? What is collective freedom worth to you?
