Mixed-media artist Nekisha Durrett joined artist teacher, and For Freedoms co-founder of Eric Gottesman in a conversation centered around the provocation: where do we go from here? The prompt, the title of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s last book, is also drawn from the title of the organization’s forthcoming publication exploring art, civic engagement, and community in response to the political, cultural, and ideological landscape. Attendees were invited to participate in an interactive exercise and the conversation explores the themes of each artist’s respective practices in relation to the text, spanning the use of mass media as a tool for artmaking, collaborative narratives, and responding to a rapidly shifting socio-political landscape. This program was presented on the occasion of The Reading Room at STABLEArts DC and was a part of For Freedoms’ Town Halls series this Fall, open forums for artist-led ideas that seek to encourage more active, collaborative, inclusive, and empathetic engagement.
