In partnership with the American Library Association's Unite Against Books Bans and the Association for Small and Rural Libraries, Brooklyn Public Library spearheaded a nationwide day of action to rally for the freedom to read. The number of book bans in the U.S. is at an all-time high and continuing to rise steeply, threatening our work in libraries and all Americans’ First Amendment rights. In 2023, over 4,400 unique titles were challenged across the country, with attempts to restrict access in 49 states according to the ALA. On Saturday, October 19th, libraries across the country gathered their patrons and supporters to unite against book bans and demonstrate that the freedom to read is an enduring, non-partisan American value that must be protected. Libraries should be safe havens of knowledge and community, where readers have free access to information from all points of view and are empowered to grapple with the dilemmas of the day. We hope that our day of action similarly unites libraries and uplifts readers nationwide.  Libraries are facing an existential threat, and this day of action was be one of the first times US libraries have banded together at such magnitude. For Freedoms was present with their newly launched monograph and the For Freedoms Lawn Sign Activation in addition to displaying digital billboards.
